Who has long missed the talented musician Grace VanderWaal? “Hollywood Stargirl” is a sequel to the coming of age drama film , “Stargirl” (2020). Despite being a continuation film of Stargirl's journey to a new place, the scenario presented is not very related to the first film. So, for those of us who haven't watched “Stargirl”, we can still follow the new plot of this film.

While “Stargirl” is more about coming of age and teenage romance, “Hollywood Stargirl” is a story about dreams and courage in the face of failure. We will also get to know the character of Stargirl, what is her dream, what she wants.

Now Stargirl is starting a new chapter in Los Angeles as her mother gets a job on a film project. She lives in a quiet rented unit where she meets a new neighbor, a teenage boy her age, Mike (Noah Taliferro).

Mike invites Stargirl to join an amateur film project with his brother. Despite only being able to sing and having no acting experience, Stargirl decided to accept the invitation. For the first time, Stargirl thought, that she might be in love, in love with Los Angeles and everything in it.

At first glance, this film will remind us of “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” ( but without the dying girl ). Where we see the formation of two teenage boys hanging out with a girl. All three have artistic talents, hangouts in films that are supported by vibrant and warm cinematography. “Hollywood Stargirl” is a feel-good teen drama that lives up to expectations in the Disney+ catalog. For those who need a positive energy intake, this film may be a cliché, but it exudes an atmosphere full of youthful optimism that is comfortable to watch.

Not too childish but not too mature as a medium for the dreary drama of life. One of Stargirl's strengths is being a character who always sees the positive side of things. Stargirl has been labeled as a manic pixie dream girl (MPDG) character in her first film, as a quirky girl who saves a boring teenage boy. Although the personality is still quirky and too imaginative, at least this time the romance scenario is not the main plot.

We'll get to see how fun and creative Stargirl is with her two new friends making movies. The objective becomes the plot where Stargirl experiences many things that make her connect with many people and opportunities, until finally finding what is her greatest desire.

All of Stargirl's optimistic attitude and philosophy will be faced with various failures experienced by more mature characters. Not trying to show whose view is more correct or which lesson is more relevant, “Hollywood Stargirl” wants to line up the topic as a new lesson.

While teenagers are often optimistic and not afraid to start new things, adults are afraid of failure. Made not a few of them stop trying and surrender to fate. It's not about taking risks or being an adult living in 'real life'. But how do we apply a positive youth spirit, then interpret failure as a lesson.

The contrast of this generation gap will be presented through the Stargirl and her friends' camp, against a row of other, more mature characters. The manuscript as a whole actually looks like subjects that are only present, but do not have the complexity to merge into one. Produce messages that are even more memorable for the audience. We only know that there are adults traumatized by failure, then a group of lucky, talented teenagers. Both parties only listen to each other's stories, but it does not really give birth to new understanding of the ongoing interactions.

As a small family that often lives on the move, we can already guess what conflicts will arise in “Hollywood Stargirl”. One issue in Stargirl's characterization is how almost anything can happen according to her will. Life is not that easy just because you think you are friendly or kind to strangers. Like other MPDG characters, he always manages to steal people's attention just because of his existence; a teenager with a unique fashion sense, doesn't have a smartphone, has a golden voice, and is insensitive to the harshness of real life. Like a fairy tale character with a magical charm.

The conflict that was trying to arise was finally resolved because Stargirl is Stargirl . Everyone loves Stargirl, life is centered on her existence as the main star. Therefore, this film can be a comfortable relaxing spectacle with eye candy visuals .
